TETRA MONO

Research. Rethink. Recreate.

MONO, the monobloc chair designed by ID AID for Interstuhl, stands for a clear design language, functional simplicity, and durability. With TETRA MONO, the existing design is taken a step further – not by changing its form, but by rethinking its material. Through extensive material research and experimentation, an innovative alternative to conventional polypropylene was developed: a recycled plastic derived from used beverage cartons. The particular challenge was to integrate this new material while preserving the chair’s defining characteristics – from its structural stability and flexibility to its refined surface quality.

The different material components of the beverage cartons – plastic, paper, and aluminum – also influence the possibilities for color customization. This material-related limitation gives rise to a distinctive aesthetic: natural, softly muted tones that lend TETRA MONO a warm, inviting appearance and a unique character. What was originally designed as short-lived packaging is given a new, long-lasting purpose. A complex combination of materials is transformed into a durable design product that makes use of existing resources and reduces the need for virgin raw materials.

TETRA MONO retains the design identity and functionality of the original while opening up a new perspective on sustainable product design: meaningful innovation does not always require a new form.

TETRA MONO demonstrates how material research, design consistency, and the intelligent use of existing resources can transform an established product into a forward-thinking solution.
